Abstract
Given the observation that the conceptual divide between human and non-human complicates addressing the specific issues related to biotechnology, particularly regarding the status assigned to living materials, this article first aims to highlight certain theoretical paradoxes to clarify epistemological and scientific questions that are fundamental to understanding the deep issues related to the definition of living matter in debates about what is termed the Anthropocene. The main objective of this article is to analyse how the model of the living-machine reflects a reductionistic approach that tends to obscure the concrete limitations of the models of exploitation and experimentation upon which biotechnology relies. The article begins by emphasising the paradoxes inherent in the attempt to decenter the social sciences in the Anthropocene era by placing the concept of the non-human within the context of its historical lineage with cybernetics. The second part specifically examines the prevalence of the living-machine concept in the history of life sciences, focusing on its implications for the current development of biotechnologies. Finally, the last part highlights the concrete limitations of this model and proposes an epistemic opening towards new ways to think about the specificity of living matter, taking into account its irreducible contingency and uncontrollable nature at a time when we face the anthropogenic consequences of biotechnological reductionism.
