Résumé

Cet article présente une réflexion sur la complémentarité entre une description quantitative du métabolisme d’un territoire et une compréhension qualitative des relations entre acteurs. Celle-ci apporte un complément aux approches plus classiques du métabolisme qui montrent les flux qui circulent, sans toujours en expliquer les raisons d’être. Pour ce faire, après une analyse du métabolisme territorial à partir de sous-systèmes créateurs de richesse, nous présentons l’apport de la notion de « capabilité » à une approche plus qualitative, notamment en passant d’une acception avant tout individuelle de cette notion à une acception territoriale. Cet apport est illustré à partir d’un cas d’étude portant sur la production du fromage de Beaufort en Savoie.

Abstract

This paper reflects on the complementarity between a quantitative description of the metabolism of a territory and a qualitative analysis of the relations between actors. This approach complements the more classical approaches to metabolism, which highlight what is circulating without explaining the reasons for such circulation. In order to do so, after presenting the analysis of territorial metabolism based on wealth creation subsystems, we show the valuable contribution of the notion of ‘capability’ for a qualitative approach, in particular by moving from the level of individual capability to territorial capability. This contribution is illustrated by the Beaufort cheese production in the French Alps.
