Abstract
The spread of educational games is increasing rapidly in the education sector. This article deals with the appropriation of an educational game. We assess the use and appropriation of an educational game by teachers in vocational agricultural education, using the example of MYMYX, ‘Mimic mycorrhizal networks’. This game was initially designed for research purposes in response to growing interest in mycorrhizae. It was then offered to teachers in vocational agricultural education. Data were to be collected in two stages between 2017 and 2022, and the use of the game observed in various training courses. We used two theoretical approaches: on the one hand, the instrumental genesis through the process of instrumentalisation and instrumentation; on the other, an evaluation grid, based on three dimensions that question the utility, usability and acceptability of an artefact. We show that the teachers’ appropriation of the game has led to a new conception in a two-phase redesign of MYMYX. This gave teachers the opportunity to adapt the resource to different student groups. This article discusses the value of taking user appropriation into account in relation to the initial design objectives.
