Evolving views on animal behaviour and welfare: an ethologist’s approach to society’s concerns about animals

Résumé

L’auteur porte son regard sur son implication à l’Institut national de recherche pour l’agriculture, l’alimentation et l’environnement (INRAE) dans le développement de l’éthologie appliquée au cours des cinq dernières décennies. Cette discipline accompagnait à l’origine des études zootechniques pour améliorer la productivité des animaux. Progressivement, l’animal et son ressenti ont été pris comme objets d’attention et de recherche du fait de l’avancement des connaissances mais surtout de l’intérêt de la société pour les conditions de vie des animaux, pour ce qui est désormais appelé leur « bien-être ». Le premier objectif des chercheurs a été de chercher à minimiser les douleurs et les souffrances générées par les techniques d’élevage. Par la suite, les plaisirs ont été également pris en compte. Pour cela, il a été nécessaire de comprendre le ressenti des animaux et la conscience qu’ils avaient de la situation qu’ils vivaient. Ce travail a été souvent conduit dans le cadre de réflexions pluridisciplinaires, en particulier d’expertises collectives.

Abstract

The author uses his experience as an applied ethologist at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) over the past fifty years to discuss the changes in our understanding of animal behaviour and, particularly, of animal welfare. When he started working in the ‘70s, ethology was a tool for designing new systems to improve production in domestic animals. Little by little, the animal itself became the target of studies due partly to developments in knowledge and understanding of animals, yet chiefly to the increasing importance the general public attached to their quality of life. The first target was to minimize pain and suffering linked to the husbandry systems. Then animal pleasure became the main subject of concern. To achieve this aim, it became increasingly important to understand better the feelings of animals and their consciousness of what they experienced. Most of this work required multidisciplinary research networks and collective research teams.
