The network as mode of organization of “bottom up” interdisciplinarity: the example of “Développement durable et Territoires fragiles” (Sustainable development and fragile territories)

Résumé

Face aux difficultés, académiques et institutionnelles, de promouvoir une interdisciplinarité "par le haut", le réseau territorial de recherche apparaît comme une alternative prometteuse. À cet égard, l'article présente le réseau interdisciplinaire Développement durable et Territoires fragiles, constitué dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais depuis la fin des années 1990. L'implication dans plusieurs opérations de recherche contractualisées et l'organisation d'une animation scientifique régulière (séminaires et revue numérique) ont aidé à conforter et à pérenniser cette initiative. Si, du point de vue de l'interdisciplinarité, l'activité du réseau n'est pas sans limites (notons en particulier l'absence regrettable de plusieurs disciplines des SHS), la flexibilité du mode d'organisation constitue un atout évident en termes d'efficacité.

Abstract

The regional research network offers an interesting alternative in the face of academic and institutional difficulties in promoting a “top down” interdisciplinarity. In this context, this article describes the interdisciplinary network “Développement durable et Territoires fragiles” (“Sustainable development and fragile territories”), set up in the Nord-Pas de Calais region (northern France) since the end of the nineties. Participation in several contract-based research operations, and the organization of a regular scientific activity (seminars and electronic journal), helped to consolidate and perpetuate this enterprise. If, from the point of view of interdisciplinarity, the activity of the network “Développement durable et Territoires fragiles” is not without its limitations (particularly the regrettable absence of several disciplines from the “social and human sciences”), its flexible mode of organization constitutes an obvious advantage in terms of effectiveness.
